Abstract

Restorative practices are a growing school-based intervention that can be used as part of a student’s discipline plan as either an alternative to suspension or in conjunction with suspension. It is meant to assist in improving student attendance, student achievement, school climate, and reducing negative behaviors if implemented correctly. This study looks at the historical disproportionality of suspensions with certain school population groups within a southwest Virginia school district while focusing on two schools that have high suspension rates. Educators from one middle school and one elementary school restorative practices as a whole-school behavioral intervention to suspension. After initial professional development training, and educator implementation of what was taught, educators at each school had very different ideas of how implementation should happen and if it could happen to create change based on the current school climate. Across the study, restorative practices are actively acceptable as a viable alternative or addition to school discipline to decrease suspension and promote a positive school climate. Educators share what is still needed for the school district to move forward and the problems that may occur in implementation. Finally, recommendations for the next steps for the school system to adopt and scale up the future implementation of restorative practices based on findings to help promote better behavior equity.
