Abstract
My work during this thesis has been focused on examining the ways women and society intersect, particularly through the lens of media. I am drawn to the visual and cultural narratives that have shaped perceptions of femininity over time and through the imposed framework of media and the physical mediums of gouache and collage, I interrogate this historical influence that media has had over femininity. I am an artist of hyper-decorative domestic scenes and imagry that counter-balence retro aesthetics with feminist themes and my work is not about nostalgia, but about tracing the ideological residues that cling to our collective psyche. The use of gouache in my work is a translation for the undervaluation and dismissal of women’s contributions in society, aligning with the medium itself, which has long been undervalued in the world of art. In a further note on media influences, I’m developing a theory of collage as a method. Unlike traditional collage artists who assemble a variety of materials, my art blends diverse influences. This practice is reflected in my paintings, where the essence of collage is a method rather than a medium. I explore the artistic context of each piece with the use of collage as both a research method for creation and a visual language to speak to the viewer. With this foundation, I can incorporate these theories literally with physical collage works that function as contextual blueprints for my paintings, as well as stand-alone pieces that represent their own act of visual display and interrogation inherent in media’s representations of femininity. The intention in my artistic practice is not only to contribute to ongoing feminist discourse, but to do so through a practice that is materially deliberate, technically sound, historically grounded, and ultimatly, sensical to my own thoughts and biases.
