Abstract

This study examined how personal values shape the ways participants use social media and engage with politics online. A mixed-method design explored links among Schwartz’s basic values, social media integration, and political engagement, along with open-ended reflections on gendered language, gender norms, and the influence of digital platforms. Quantitative results showed that benevolence, self-direction, and universalism were the most strongly endorsed values, and that several value patterns were tied to social media integration and political engagement. Achievement and universalism predicted higher political engagement, while tradition and self-direction predicted lower engagement. The qualitative findings showed that participants viewed gendered digital discourse as emotionally charged and often exaggerated, interpreting these messages through values related to autonomy, fairness, and social awareness.
