Abstract

In the twenty-first century, design education has evolved from the training of designers as a trade to the current doctoral levels of study. This study examines the future role of the designer in Alberta and how design education can support this role, using the DesignX Manifesto (2014) as a guide. Applying design thinking techniques, the researcher used a Likert Scale questionnaire to ask current Albertan design educators what they thought about design education in the province. These findings served as the basis for workshops with design educators in Alberta looking at "how might design educators reimagine a future vision of the design practice for Alberta” and "how might design educators reimagine design education in Alberta to deliver this future vision". The findings extended beyond issues discussed in the workshops—failure as part of design and ethics of design—to discuss the importance of community for Alberta's design industry and education.
